Singalong :: Hiatus Kaiyote, Nakamarra

I fell in love with Hiatus Kaiyote earlier this year when they supported Erykah Badu‘s Australian tour.  Then I discovered this independent Melbourne four piece was nominated for the Best R&B Performance Grammy last year with this song, Nakamarra.

It’s my choice for Singalong this Friday not only because of its chilled out end of the week kinda vibe, but also because the video features the great Australian outback – and I’m heading to Uluru for the first time on Sunday, for work. I’m feeling blessed after a somewhat emotionally challenging week.  RIP Robin Williams. x

Get out your brightest makeup, gold spandex pants and nose ring chain, and ease into the weekend with lead singer Nai Palm – who looks like she should front a punk rock band but who has the sweetest R&B voice going around locally.

And interestingly the word ‘Nakamarra’ is one of the aboriginal ‘skin’ names, that defines kinship (here and here). How perfect!

To you and the weekend I sing…

“Love you, love you, love you, I do.”
